About the role

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) works under the direction of the Registered Nurse. PCAs collect patient data, provide personal care, perform point-of-care testing (e.g., whole-blood glucose), turn/position and mobilize patients, and assist with patient needs with a focus on progress toward discharge, including during transitions within the acute-care stay. PCAs are trained to perform technical procedures such as blood draws and electrocardiography. They promote resource availability for patient care through collaboration with Materials Coordinators for supply use, stocking, and storage. PCAs also help maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment of care and may serve as activity companions for patients requiring 1:1 observation.

Responsibilities

• Collect pertinent patient data (vital signs, height, weight, intake/output) and report abnormal findings to the RN and care team.
• Participate in care planning and nursing-report processes, incorporating patient/family rights in decision-making.
• Provide personal care: bathing, oral care, skin care, grooming, dressing, toileting, and assistance with eating/hydration.
• Incorporate safe patient handling into restorative care (ambulation, range of motion, assistive/prosthetic devices).
• Promote a clean, orderly, and safe environment using standard and transmission-based precautions.
• Document all care in the patient record and communicate patient progress toward goals/outcomes to the RN.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/G.E.D. or equivalent (required).
• Less than 1 year of healthcare experience or completion of a certified nurse assistant course (preferred).
• Experience as a paramedic or emergency technician (preferred).
• Basic knowledge of medical terminology (medium proficiency).
• Adherence to ethical conduct standards and ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.

Pay

$43,599.00 – $56,679.00 per year.
