Patient Care Assistant - Critical Care Unit

About the role

As a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) at North Alabama Medical Center, you'll embrace a vital mission dedicated to making communities healthier. This role is part of a regional facility with over 200 physicians representing more than 42 specialty areas of medicine.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic patient care as delegated by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, possible blood glucose measurements, and accurate intake/output recording.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, eating, toileting, ambulation).
• Observes and promptly reports abnormal physical, mental, or emotional findings to nursing staff.
• Maintains clean, safe, and well-stocked patient rooms and common areas.
• Manages the tech desk and supports nursing/physician staff and overall department throughput.
• Documents care and activities per unit standards.
• Performs other duties as assigned; participates in performance improvement and required education.

Requirements

• Requires critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment.
• Rapid learning and navigation of multiple software systems.
• Effective English communication skills (read/write/speak).
• Ability to complete the Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire.
• High School diploma preferred.
• SRNA or EMT preferred.
• BCLS certification required; Handle with Care preferred.

The 24-hour emergency department serves as the primary referral center for major trauma cases in Northwest Alabama.
