Patient Account Representative 3, Appeals and Underpayments
About the role
The Patient Account Representative 3, Appeals and Underpayments role within UW Medicine's Patient Financial Services Department handles patient inquiries, manages special billing programs, and resolves underpayment issues. The position works in a structured environment with strict timeframes and requires a combination of customer service and administrative skills.
Responsibilities
- Make outbound and take inbound calls with patients, families, insurance companies, and other stakeholders
- Manage special billing programs and projects, including case rate and specialty billing programs
- Handle Medicare RAC and Intermediary requests, as well as complex billing situations
- Obtain detailed information to ensure reimbursement and contract adherence
- Absorb and relay information to relevant departments to improve patient service
- Research and resolve underpaid accounts
- Determine and post adjustments to patient accounts according to department procedures
- Aid in training new staff members
- Exercise judgment to resolve patient account issues
- May maintain spreadsheets and write correspondence using Microsoft Excel and Word
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Three years of experience in patient accounting, customer service, or a related office environment
- Desired: Proven ability to compose successful appeals and overturn denials, knowledge of billing forms and payer requirements, and familiarity with Epic Hospital Billing and/or Professional Billing systems
Qualifications
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Pay and Schedule
Pay Range: Minimum $24.60/hour, Maximum $35.21/hour
