About the role
This entry-level position is an onsite role at HSHS - St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. The Patient Access Specialist performs admitting duties for all patients, ensuring compliance with organizational mission, goals, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Assign accurate Medical Record Numbers (MRNs) and complete medical necessity/compliance checks.
- Provide proper patient instructions, collect insurance information, and process physician orders.
- Utilize overlay tools while delivering excellent customer service as measured by Press Ganey.
- Operate the telephone switchboard to relay calls with adherence to policies and compassionate service.
- Meet point-of-service goals and utilize quality auditing/reporting systems to correct accounts.
- Conduct audits of accounts to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with audit standards.
- Pre-register patient accounts, including inbound/outbound calls to obtain demographic, insurance, and financial information.
- Collect point-of-service payments, past due balances, and offer payment plan options.
- Explain and obtain signatures for general consent for treatment forms and distribute patient education documents (e.g., Important Message from Medicare, MOON form, ABNs).
- Review insurance eligibility responses, select applicable plan codes, and enter benefit data to support billing processes.
- Screen for medical necessity using Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) software for Medicare patients.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- CRCR certification required within 9 months of hire (company-paid).
- 1+ years of customer service experience.
- Openness to innovation, including AI, to improve processes and patient/client experiences.

Pay
$17.00 - $18.15/hour based on experience.
Schedule
Full-time, onsite at HSHS - St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL. Available shifts:
- 7:00 PM – 3:30 AM, rotating weekends.
- 5:30 AM – 2:00 PM, rotating weekends.
- 10:30 PM – 7:00 AM, rotating weekends.
- Varied shifts.
