Job Description
The Patient Access Specialist is responsible for supporting the patient intake and registration process within a healthcare organization. This role serves as a primary point of contact for patients and helps ensure accurate scheduling, insurance verification, registration, and financial clearance while delivering excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet and assist patients in person and over the phone
- Schedule, reschedule, and confirm patient appointments
- Register patients and maintain accurate demographic information
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, referrals, and authorizations
- Collect co-pays, deductibles, and outstanding balances
- Explain financial responsibilities and payment options to patients
- Absorb required consent and privacy documentation
- Cook with providers, nurses, and insurance companies to support patient care
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies
- Utilize electronic medical record (EMR/EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner
Required Skills
- Previous healthcare customer service or administrative experience
- Attention to detail and data accuracy
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced healthcare environment
- Knowledge of insurance verification and medical terminology
Qualifications
- 1–2 years of healthcare registration, scheduling, or customer service is required
- High school diploma or GED required
- Insurance verification and/or prior authorization experience required
- Associate degree or healthcare certification preferred
