Qualifications

Required:

• Medical or clerical experience
• 50 wpm keyboard skills
• Excellent spelling, math, and problem-solving skills
• Filing skills
• Telephone skills
• Data entry experience
• Ability to work independently and with co-workers
• Effective communication with patients and professionals
• Ability to prioritize, organize, and attend to detail

Preferred:

• Medical terminology
• Limited ICD-9 coding knowledge

Physical and Mental Demands

• Medium physical demand level capabilities required
• Able to accommodate a fast, efficient pace
• Able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time
• Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push a wheelchair up to 250 pounds
• Assist a patient in and out of a chair, wheelchair, or from an automobile
• Able to ride in an elevator
• 20/25 vision with correction required
• Good hearing and legible handwriting

Responsibilities

• Performs department patient and visitor reception, and directs patients to the appropriate location
• Obtains and verifies insurance and billing information
• Accurately processes information for all insurance types and obtains necessary information for unfamiliar insurance types
• Audits charts daily for completeness and accuracy, completes follow-ups within the designated time, and forwards follow-ups needing completion before the next shift
• Prepares identification bracelets and paperwork used during patient care in a timely manner
• Maintains over 95% accuracy
• Looks up non-scheduled patient exams in the database
• Contacts appropriate personnel when office equipment repair is needed
• Maintains close working relationships with ancillary clinical departments and physician’s offices
• Attends meetings and supports the future directions of the division, aiding in communicating improvements
• Trains and orients new department clerical staff
• Communicates effectively, both in person and on the telephone, and interacts with a variety of personality types
• Handles stress and pressure and makes decisions effectively
• Understands, supports, and complies with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of Sky Lakes Medical Center
• Maintains competency in all position responsibilities
• Demonstrates competence in relation to the defined mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the organization through proficiency testing, skill demonstration, and documentation review
