About the role
This position involves capturing Critical Data Elements (CDEs) through patient interviews and using the EMR to ensure program needs are met and patients can be admitted into treatment. The role also includes registering patients accurately, managing insurance information, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
Responsibilities
- Obtains and processes patient demographic, insurance, and medical information
- Registers patients correctly into the Master Patient Index
- Acts appropriately on Real Time Insurance eligibility messages, including adding, removing, correcting, and terminating coverages
- Maintains empathy and professionalism during registration interviews and while providing necessary regulatory information
- Identifies and resolves insurance verification issues and informs patients of options
- Answers and returns admission-related calls, completes EPIC encounters, and gathers substance use history
- Provides warm and friendly greetings to patients and their families/visitors
- Schedules appropriate Pathways appointments based on ASAM criteria
- Communicates clearly and professionally with internal and external customers, including clinical staff, coworkers, administration, and other outside departmental staff
- Works collaboratively with the charge nurse and assigned shift coordinator
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Two years recovery-oriented sobriety preferred
- One year experience in a healthcare setting, preferably behavioral health
- Experience with patient registration and scheduling in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting preferred
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification or obtained within 90 days of hire
- American Health Association Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtained within 90 days of hire
- 35 wpm typing/word processing skills required
- Courteous and non-judgmental communication skills
- Beginning knowledge of American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) dimensions and criteria
- Light work capacity
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- College course work toward an AA or BS degree in the Behavioral Health Field or two years recovery-oriented sobriety preferred
- One year experience providing service in a health care setting, preferably behavioral health
- Experience with patient registration and scheduling in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting preferred
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification or obtained within 90 days of hire
- American Health Association Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtained within 90 days of hire
- 35 wpm typing/word processing skills required

Skills
- Technical knowledge in multiple systems, including but not limited to Epic-based applications, administrative applications, and necessary online applications
- Ability to manage assigned EPIC work queues independently
- Effective prioritization and workflow management within departmental deadlines
- Understanding of downtime procedures and ability to perform job functions during such conditions
- Compliance with department and organizational policies
- Knowledge of departmental issues and hospital-wide changes
- Ability to assist with the training and orientation of new staff
- Ability to identify and resolve insurance verification issues
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal and external customers
- Collaborative working relationship with the charge nurse and assigned shift coordinator
