About the Role

Arranges for the efficient and accurate registration, screening, and pre-service collection calls for all patients. Obtains required signatures and provides general information regarding hospital policies, registration procedures, insurance benefits, patient rights, and patient financial responsibilities. Responsible for providing extraordinary customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors all procedures for financial responsibility and pre-payment at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Bluffton Hospital, EWOC, and other BV locations as necessary. Maintains reports and records.
  • Conducts insurance verification via phone, fax, or online methods.
  • Gathers and documents patient deductible, out-of-pocket coinsurance, and copay information; reviews all bad debt accounts.
  • Provides patients with an estimated cost of their procedure and defines all bad debt for additional payment.
  • Informs patients of all payment options. Collects patient payments using a credit card machine over the phone or in-person at registration on the date of service.
  • Problem-solves and offers assistance as needed to all customer groups.
  • Pre-registers patients as needed.
  • Compiles and provides Good Faith Estimate information to appropriate patient populations in compliance with regulations.
  • Acts as a liaison between the facility and patient/family to resolve problems and/or address complaints. Explains registration procedures, BVH policies, and responds to questions/concerns regarding insurance benefits.
  • Participates in unit and hospital educational programs to maintain current skills and competency levels. Supports new hire and department training, providing a positive learning environment and compassionate mentoring.
  • Adheres to all departmental and organizational policies/procedures. Actively participates in departmental meetings and process improvement initiatives.
  • Informs Department Supervisor/Manager of inconsistencies in the electronic health record.
  • Performs all duties in a manner consistent with and supportive of the mission, vision, and values of Blanchard Valley Health System.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Data entry and/or PC experience.
  • Medical terminology coursework or knowledge.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to work remotely and attend onsite meetings as needed.
  • Ability to work at the computer for long periods and skilled in keyboard use.
  • Ability to use the telephone to respond to customers and use the computer and telephone simultaneously.
  • Positive, service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles over the life span and the ability to assess data reflective of patient status.
  • Interprets appropriate information to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration, patient advocacy, or pre-service payment collections experience.
  • Associate’s degree in a healthcare-related field.

Physical Demands

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent bending, squatting, kneeling, and twisting. The individual must occasionally lift up to 20 pounds and assist in pushing patients in wheelchairs (100-350 lbs). Requires excellent eye/hand coordination to operate various office machines. Corrected vision and hearing within the normal range are necessary.
