Pathology Operations Director

About the role

The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for the day-to-day functions of the assigned locations. This leader directs regulatory compliance, ensures adherence to FCS policies and procedures, maintains the QA/QM activities of the department, and monitors all testing aspects and address any issues with testing and workflow efficiency and efficacy.

Responsibilities

  • Writes, reviews, and ensures compliance with all Laboratory Administration Policies and Procedures
  • Manages the contracts of the laboratory departments, including working with the Legal and Procurement departments on negotiation activities
  • Leads and monitors the projects of the laboratory to achieve successful implementations within the established timeline
  • Performs HR-related duties as needed for direct and indirect reports. This includes but is not limited to annual performance reviews, new employee orientation, and addressing of performance and behavioral issues.
  • Financial Management activities, including:
    • With the VP of Laboratory Services, establish annual capital and operational budgets for the Central Laboratory
    • Review and address monthly budget variance reports
    • Work with the Facilities Department to address any building-related issues
  • Effectively manage relationships with the vendors of products used in the Laboratory
  • Lead/Participate in Service Recovery activities as needed
  • Provide effective communication via all modes needed to lab staff, practice staff and clinicians, and others as needed
  • Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient and employee information at all times

Requirements

  • Education/Certifications & Licenses: Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or related field. A Master’s Degree is preferred. Licensed as Clinical Laboratory Supervisor by Florida Department of Health
  • Experience: Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in laboratory medicine. At least five (5) years of supervisory experience demonstrating progressive responsibilities

  • Communication Skills: Good command of the English language. Second language is an asset but not required. Effective communication skills (oral, written, presentation), is an active listener, and effectively provides balanced feedback.

Ability to build an engaging culture of quality, performance effectiveness and operational excellence through best practices, strong business and political acumen, collaboration and partnerships, as well as a positive employee, physician and community relations.
  • Self-Management: Effectively manages own time, conflicting priorities, self, stress, and professional development. Self-motivated and self-starter with ability work independently with limited supervision. Ability to work remotely effectively as required.
  • Leadership and Mentoring: Effectively lead and facilitate group discussions, coach, mentor, motivate, and engage others to align to a common goal. Ability to effectively lead projects from inception through implementation and assessment.
  • Human Resources Management: Effectively hire, coach and support staff develop, as applicable, as well as manage resources, performance and employee relations, and supervise within established policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook required.
