Pathologists' Assistant
About the role
We are seeking a Pathologists' Assistant who can contribute to the efficient workflow processes in our frozen section and gross examination areas. Your responsibilities will involve working closely with on-site Pathologists, triaging specimens, taking dictation, performing specialized procedures, maintaining records, and assisting in report compilation.
Responsibilities
- Organize and manage workflow processes in the frozen section and gross examination areas.
- Work closely with on-site Pathologists to determine grossing priorities and take their instructions regarding grossing technique and quality assessment.
- Confer with and share relevant information with other Pathologist Assistants to enhance productivity and expand knowledge.
- Triage specimens received from surgery, dictate gross findings, and refer tissue sections for microscopic review.
- Select and identify tissue for microscopic study and determine appropriate fixative solutions.
- Perform specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification, maintain and coordinate specimen and records for these procedures, and submit requests for special histological procedures and stains when necessary.
- Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictations, assist in compiling reports, and label/store gross tissue specimens.
- Photograph specimen samples as needed for instructional and documentation purposes.
- Perform photo microscopy on cases for interdepartmental conferences or teaching, and maintain complete and accurate records of all gross and microscopic photographs.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
A bachelor’s degree is required, with a master’s degree preferred. Three to five years of experience in a pathology histology laboratory setting is required, with certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred. Three to five years of grossing experience in a hospital setting is also accepted in lieu of ASCP Certification or a master’s degree.
