Patent Scientist
About the role
BakerHostetler is seeking a Patent Scientist to join its Intellectual Property Practice Group in Dallas. This role offers an opportunity for individuals with a technical background to apply their Computer Science education in a practice that combines science, technology, and intellectual property law.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate emerging technologies and product developments to identify potentially patentable innovations.
- Collaborate with inventors and technical teams to understand underlying concepts and inventive features.
- Prepare technical illustrations, figures, and supporting materials for patent applications.
- Draft patent applications, including detailed specifications and claims, with a focus on technical accuracy and clarity.
- Review prior art and cited references, develop response strategies, and assist with patent prosecution activities.
- Participate in discussions with patent examiners and support efforts to advance applications toward allowance.
- Analyze competitor technologies and intellectual property landscapes to support strategic decision making.
- Assist attorneys and clients in developing and managing patent portfolios.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science required.
- Advanced degree and/or relevant industry experience preferred.
- Coursework or practical experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, semiconductor technologies, software systems, or related technical fields is preferred.
- Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Two or more years of patent preparation and prosecution experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience as a USPTO Patent Examiner is a plus.
- Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office is preferred.
- Candidates who are not currently registered must have the interest and eligibility necessary to obtain registration.

Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and exercise sound judgment. Strong academic credentials, analytical abilities, and attention to detail.
