About the role

The role of a Patent Classifier at Serco’s Intellectual Property (IP) Services Program involves determining appropriate classifications in accordance with both U.S. and international patent classification systems through technical knowledge, research, and automated tools. This position supports a contract with the USPTO and provides similar analysis and patent search services for law firms and inventors.

Responsibilities

  • Determine appropriate classifications in accordance with U.S. and international patent classification systems.
  • Apply knowledge of classification processes to assign U.S. Patent Classification (USPC) and Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) codes to complex technical subject matter.
  • Provide analysis and prepare written reports for patent attorneys and others in the IP industry.
  • Use automated systems to perform research and classification operations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in on-going program training to expand knowledge in additional technical fields and patent services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • 0-2 years of experience or 2 years of additional work experience in lieu of degree.
  • Ability to think critically is vital to this role.
  • Understanding of technical concepts and/or Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • 25% travel may be required.
  • Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a Public Trust Security Clearance.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong reading comprehension and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Computer workstation usage for 8 hours per day.

Pay

The range for this position can be found at the top of this posting. This range is provided as a general guideline and represents a good faith estimate across all experience levels. Actual base salary will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the scope of the role, relevant experience, job-related knowledge, education and training, key skills, and geographic market considerations.

Schedule

Full-time schedule is typically 40 hours per week.
