About the Role
The Pastry Baker is responsible for baking from scratch production of artisan baked goods, including laminated pastries, breakfast pastries, cookies, pies, individual pastries, and cakes, including wedding cakes, within a commercial bakery setting. They ensure the quality, taste, and consistency of pastry while adhering to food safety standards. The Pastry Baker collaborates with other bakery staff to meet production goals and deliver exceptional products to customers.
Responsibilities
- Performs all areas of pastry production, including making from scratch pastry baked goods such as laminated pastries, breakfast pastries, cookies, pies, individual pastries, and cakes, including wedding cakes.
- Contributes to improvement of bakery operations by participating in product development, menu planning, keeping current with baking trends, and innovation.
- Completes bakery administration tasks as necessary, which may include product ordering and assisting in monitoring inventory.
- Works cross-functionally with departments in the facility and companywide.
- Participates in professional development as recommended by leadership or self-directed.
- Sustains a clean work environment and adheres to food safety and sanitation standards.
- Assists in training interns and new bakers.
- Adheres to company-wide green norms, looks for ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and strives to continually improve and implement new processes to reduce environmental impact.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years baking experience, preferably in a professional baking environment.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently produce exceptional baked products.
- Proficiency and accuracy with scaling, mixing, baking, and finish work.
- Ability to follow formulas and instructions accurately, study formulas, choose exact ingredients, and scale correctly.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and effectively share space, ingredients, and equipment with coworkers during production.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to inform others, listen effectively, respect others’ points of view, and work toward common goals.
- Reliability in punctuality, attendance, and ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a standing position for extended periods of time (up to 10 hours a day).
- Use hands to handle, control, feel objects, tools, and controls.
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Operate commercial bakery equipment.
- Repeat the same movements.
- Regularly work in a kitchen environment where allergens may be present.
- Regularly touch and taste food products which may contain allergens.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced bakery environment.
- Exposed to hot temperatures and loud noise.
- Safety is the responsibility of everyone; must identify and correct unsafe conditions immediately.
- Engages in safety and compliance training programs.
Uniform Requirements
- Footwear must be closed-toed, non-slip shoes (shoe voucher provided).
- Socks must be worn.
- Long pants, skirt, or shorts required.
- Clean King Arthur Baking T-shirt (provided).
- Clean white apron (provided).
- Hair and facial hair covering must be worn (hair/beard net provided).
- Jewelry is not permitted, unless it is a permanent piercing or a plain wedding band.
- Gloves when handling baked goods post-bake.

Pay
$19.64 to $22.14 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Schedule
This is a full-time role, working 40 hours per week with one weekend day required. Shifts are five 8-hour days and start as early as 3:00 AM.
Location
Norwich, VT; onsite daily.
