About the Community

West Oneonta is a small hamlet in the Town of Oneonta in central New York State, nestled in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Originally settled in the late 1700s by farmers from Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and other areas, the community today serves as a "suburb" of the city of Oneonta. It is home to a diverse mix of residents, including young families, retirees, and long-time locals. The area has two mobile home parks, one designated for residents 55 and older, and sees some residents migrate south during winter months.

As of 2022, the population within a 2.5-mile radius of West Oneonta was over 5,000, with the largest demographic being individuals aged 35 to 65. The community is nearly evenly split between single and married residents, with most holding at least a high school diploma and many possessing bachelor’s or graduate degrees. Approximately 46% of employed residents work in educational services, and the most common household income range is $50,000–$75,000. The population is predominantly white, with smaller African-American and Hispanic communities.

West Oneonta is home to five religious groups: West Oneonta Baptist Church, Spirit & Truth Assembly, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Oneonta Seventh Day Adventist. Nearby Oneonta, with a population of approximately 12,500, offers additional religious options, including Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Assembly of God, Wesleyan, Quaker, Church of Christ, Unitarian Universalist, Salvation Army, and numerous non-denominational churches.

Oneonta is also an educational and cultural hub, hosting SUNY Oneonta (enrollment 5,900+) and Hartwick College (enrollment 1,165). The city provides public access to college programs, entertainment, the Catskill Symphony Orchestra, live theater at Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center, a collegiate baseball team (Oneonta Outlaws), a baseball camp (Cooperstown All-Star Village), parks, golf courses, and other low-cost or free activities.

About the Church

Founded in 1807, West Oneonta Baptist Church has faithfully served its community for over 200 years. Throughout its history, the church has planted other congregations in the area and maintained a consistent mission: to serve and glorify God. Despite periods of growth and decline, the church has remained steadfast in its trust in the Lord.

Historically, the church has operated various ministries, including a nursery school, food pantry, Spanish service, and a New Commandment men’s ministry. At one time, it employed a part-time youth pastor. Following the pandemic, the church is rebuilding, sometimes struggling to staff desired ministries, but relying on God’s faithfulness to meet its needs.

Weekly activities include Sunday worship followed by men’s, women’s, and children’s Sunday School classes (adult classes combine in summer). The women’s ministry, "Called Together," meets monthly, while men gather for breakfasts and work days. Several Bible study groups meet during the week, and the church hosts annual women’s and men’s conferences attended by believers and guests from the area. Wednesday evenings feature a well-attended Bible study and prayer meeting, an AWANA program during the school year, and a teen group. Vacation Bible School is held the week after the school year ends. Children’s Sunday School and children’s church are offered on Sunday mornings, though there is currently no teen Sunday School class.

The church is located in a community with active cultic groups, including Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, and Spirit and Truth Assembly (a group that denies the Trinity). West Oneonta Baptist Church seeks to share the gospel in this context. Currently led by an interim pastor, the church recently underwent a Venture Church Network assessment and adopted new governing documents. New elders and deacons will be selected at the annual meeting in October.

The congregation averages 40–45 attendees, many of whom are retirees. Despite its size, the fellowship is warm and committed, with palpable love among members. The church praises God for those He has brought to them and remains determined to reach more people in the community with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

About the Role

The next pastor of West Oneonta Baptist Church will prioritize their personal relationship with God, recognizing its foundational importance to their ministry. While acknowledging their own limitations in skills, time, and experience, the pastor will fulfill responsibilities either personally, through delegation, or by outsourcing to capable individuals or teams, both within and outside the church.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an avid student of the Word of God, presenting Scripture boldly, clearly, and applicably, and encouraging the congregation to apply it in their daily lives.
  • Conduct and coordinate Sunday services in collaboration with the worship team.
  • Work with the elders to lead the church in its mission by:
    • Identifying spiritual gifts among members.
    • Assisting in the development of those gifts.
    • Identifying and cultivating future spiritual leaders.
    • Delegating responsibilities to gifted individuals or teams.
    • Exhorting, motivating, and leading the church in outreach with the gospel of Jesus Christ to the local community.
  • Love and enjoy people, relating to them sincerely and humbly, and leading by example to encourage the congregation to follow Jesus Christ.
  • Discern the needs of individuals in the flock and provide necessary pastoral care, including warning, admonishing, rebuking, and correcting the church or individuals as needed.
  • Instruct the congregation in loving and studying God’s Word, pursuing His will, bearing spiritual fruit, and making disciples.
  • Support and equip ministries focused on missions, family, and youth, encouraging those with gifts and passion in these areas.
  • Possess or develop organizational skills to coordinate the church’s day-to-day operations, or identify and recruit a church member with these skills.
  • Coordinate with elders to visit individuals and families within the church and community, and encourage the congregation to demonstrate hospitality.
  • Provide pastoral counseling for both formal and informal opportunities, dedicating time each week to counseling church members. Delegate counseling responsibilities to elders, other gifted individuals, or professional biblical counselors when necessary.
  • Pursue professional growth through meetings with like-minded pastors and elders for discipleship, study, and mutual encouragement, as well as continuing education through classes, seminars, and conferences.
