About the role
A Mechanical Apprentice, known at Drummac as Qualified Person (QP), works under the supervision of a Passenger Rail Mechanic to maintain and repair passenger rail cars and locomotives while adhering to corporate policies, safety protocols, and all applicable regulations.
Responsibilities
- Performs air brake inspection of passenger cars, private cars, and locomotives, with knowledge of air brake systems
- Performs locomotive daily inspections; troubleshoots and handles repair/replacement of parts
- Troubleshoots passenger cars, including toilet systems, air conditioning systems, doors, panels, lights, electrical systems, and brake systems, and makes necessary repairs
- Fills out regulatory, client, and company-required paperwork
- Performs electrical tests; removes, disassembles, replaces, repairs, modifies, rebuilds, assembles, adjusts, and maintains batteries and electrical equipment or components on locomotives
- Communicates written and/or verbal findings of inspections to supervisor
- Works overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required
- Maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate dynamic train schedules
- Works outdoors in inclement conditions
- Wears and uses required protective equipment while working
- Takes responsibility for personal safety on the job
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license
- High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent reading, writing, and reasoning skills)
- Trade school or formal railroad locomotive or diesel mechanical maintenance training
- Knowledge of locomotive mechanical, locomotive electrical, or industrial heavy equipment mechanical experience
- Successful completion of a pre-employment screening process
