Passenger Rail Mechanic Apprentice

About the Role

As a Mechanical Apprentice (Qualified Person - QP) at Drummac, you will work under the supervision of a Passenger Rail Mechanic to maintain and repair passenger rail cars and locomotives. This role requires strict adherence to corporate policies, health and safety protocols, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

• Performs air brake inspections of passenger cars, private cars, and locomotives, with knowledge of air brake systems.
• Conducts locomotive daily inspections; troubleshoots and handles repair/replacement of parts.
• Troubleshoots passenger cars, including toilet systems, air conditioning systems, doors, panels, lights, electrical systems, and brake systems, and makes necessary repairs.
• Fills out regulatory, client, and company-required paperwork.
• Performs electrical tests, removes, disassembles, replaces, repairs, modifies, rebuilds, assembles, adjusts, and maintains batteries and electrical equipment/components on locomotives.
• Communicates written and/or verbal findings of inspections to supervisors.
• Works overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required.
• Maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate dynamic train schedules.
• Works outdoors in inclement conditions while using required protective equipment.
• Takes responsibility for personal safety and performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent reading, writing, and reasoning skills).
• Valid driver’s license.
• Trade school or formal railroad locomotive/diesel mechanical maintenance training.
• Knowledge of locomotive mechanical, locomotive electrical, or industrial heavy equipment mechanical experience.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment screening process.

Pay

Hourly rate range for Passenger Rail Mechanic Apprentice candidates in San Luis Obispo, California: $25–$27. Actual hourly rate offered will be determined based on relevant skills and experience.
