About the role
Organizes and maintains a field survey crew to complete assigned projects, with a strong focus on Construction Staking to support upcoming projects. Accurately collects, calculates, and records field data for topographic maps, record of survey maps, boundary surveys, and ALTA/NSPS. Reviews job specifications and plans fieldwork methods and costs.
Responsibilities
- Manages and oversees a survey crew and all operations assigned to that crew, ensuring the accuracy of all work performed.
- Prepares and verifies mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering; computes distances, bearings, traverses, and elevations.
- Conducts project research, secures equipment, uses safety techniques, performs survey operations, and handles equipment, records data, and other associated duties.
- Performs construction staking to mark precise locations for buildings, rights-of-way, and utilities in accordance with project plans.
- Operates, checks, and performs basic field adjustments on transits, total stations, data collectors, levels, compass, tribrachs, and tripods.
- Keeps neat and orderly field notes for standard surveying operations: leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, layout, as-built surveys, boundary surveys, profile, and cross-section surveys.
- Enters field data and produces positional information (e.g., leveling, traversing, topographic mapping) using a hand-held calculator or micro-computer software.
- Reads and interprets construction plans, topographical maps, and final maps and records or survey data.
- Operates and oversees the use of survey instruments, ensuring proper care and cleaning of all instruments and equipment.
- Ensures all survey materials and equipment are clean, charged, in good working condition, and adequately stowed and loaded onto the survey truck each day.
- Assists engineers with as-built information, site conditions, and conflicts found with engineering plans as requested.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of survey experience, or a combination of survey experience and academic preparation.
- At least three (3) years of experience as a Party Chief.
- LSIT certification or ability to sit for the LSIT exam is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive company vehicles.
Skills
- Proficient with data collection techniques and conventional field note-taking and sketching.
- Knowledge of Total Stations and Robotics.
- Proficient with Trimble GPS data collection software.
- Skills in construction stakeout and horizontal/vertical control.
- Work may be conducted indoors and outdoors and is subject to extreme weather conditions.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position may or may not have supervisory and/or oversight responsibilities.
