About the Role

Lone Star College-Houston North Fairbanks offers high-quality, low-cost academic transfer and career training education to 80,000+ students each semester. The Fairbanks location provides services including advising, registration, counseling, and tutoring. Academic programs include basic transfer courses, developmental studies, and English for Speakers of Other Languages.

This role involves tutoring and instructing students and community members who need learning assistance in assigned discipline(s) and study skills. Responsibilities include providing tutoring services, fostering a conducive learning atmosphere, and supporting student academic success.

Responsibilities

• Deliver tutoring services to students at scheduled times (individual or group sessions).
• Post and maintain a weekly schedule of available hours for student appointments.
• Assist students with the development of study skills necessary for post-secondary education.
• Keep regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions.
• Monitor and review student work; modify and personalize tutoring strategies to accommodate different learning styles and needs.
• Facilitate the learning process by encouraging students to take responsibility for their progress.
• Interact with LSC staff and/or faculty to obtain course syllabi or materials and develop tutoring resources.
• Deliver feedback to staff and/or faculty regarding student progress.
• Continue professional education through research and review of relevant material.
• Assist with additional duties such as covering the Courtesy Counter, answering phones, organizing materials, and checking out resources.
• Complete and submit required documents accurately and timely.
• Actively participate in departmental meetings.
• Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Demonstrated proficiency in assigned discipline's subject matter.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Commitment to quality service to students.
• Ability and commitment to work collaboratively.
• Ability to work independently with little direct or continuous supervision.

Qualifications

• Transcripts and/or a proficiency test may be required.
• Bachelor's degree or higher.

Work Environment

• The work is sedentary; typically involves sitting comfortably, though there may be some walking, standing, bending, or carrying of light items.
• Equipment used includes PC workstations running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculators, phones, and general office equipment.
• Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards.

Pay

Hourly pay rate is $20.77.
