Part-Time Truck Driver

Responsibilities

• Safe and efficient transport and delivery of freight by operating (driving) tractor-trailer combinations
• Hook and unhook trailers from the tractor or converter dollies, including pushing/pulling dollies into place and adjusting landing gear
• Load and unload trailers, with or without assistance or mechanical equipment
• Perform fueling tasks and inspect tractor, trailer, and equipment for defects before, during, and after trips using an automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD)
• Check shipping papers to verify load details and cargo securement; install additional blocking or load locks as needed
• Install and remove tire chains based on weather conditions
• Drive truck to destination in compliance with Federal and State regulations (up to 10 hours interstate or 12 hours California intrastate driving, followed by an 8-hour off-duty period)
• Maneuver vehicle in difficult situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, or tight loading docks
• Ensure all shipping documentation (e.g., bills of lading, freight bills, weight tickets) is available for inspection, accompanies shipments, and is submitted to dispatch daily
• Maintain records for compliance with State and Federal regulations, including driver’s logs, fuel purchases, and mileage records
• Report accidents, safety hazards, delays, or irregularities related to cargo pick-up/delivery
• Punctuality and regular attendance are mandatory
• Perform other duties as assigned by management

Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• Previous tractor-trailer driving experience with 48’ to 57’ dry vans or 42’ tanks (required for training position)
• Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations in English
• Working knowledge of vehicle safety systems, DOT/State regulations, and hazardous materials transportation
• Availability for around-the-clock trips and extended periods away from home
• Meet and maintain U.S. Department of Transportation medical standards
• Pass a drug test and comply with random alcohol/drug testing if hired

Physical Requirements

• Sit and remain alert while driving for up to 11 hours interstate or 16 hours California intrastate
• Shift a manual transmission and operate foot pedals
• Perform occasional squatting, crouching, bending, twisting, climbing, and balancing to handle freight and enter/exit the vehicle (cab floor 36–66 inches above ground)
• Push/pull up to 2000 pounds using a dolly or cart, and push/pull freight weighing up to 50 pounds without mechanical aid
• Frequently carry freight weighing 1–50 pounds for distances up to 50 feet
• Frequently reach for freight at waist level and occasionally above shoulder or below waist level
• Load/unload trailers with freight weighing up to 50,000 pounds, including lifting 45-pound cases to/from heights over four feet or stowing 50-pound cartons overhead
• Install/remove tire chains in inclement weather
• Stand for at least 40% of the day and walk for 20% on surfaces like concrete, wood, or metal (sometimes slippery/wet)
• Climb ladders safely and operate electronic logging devices (ELD)
• Hook/unhook commercial vehicle combinations, manually adjust landing gear, operate fifth-wheel release levers, and handle safety chains/cargo doors
• Fuel vehicles and check engine oil/coolant levels
• Spend 10%–30% of time outdoors exposed to environmental conditions (e.g., weather extremes, traffic delays, irregular schedules)
• Endure noise, vibration, and fatigue associated with driving large commercial vehicles in crowded conditions
