Part-Time Student Front Desk Assistant, Jewish Culture Center
Indiana University’s Jewish Culture Center is a vibrant hub dedicated to enriching Jewish student life and educating the broader campus community about Jewish culture, tradition, and identity. Established in partnership with the Office of Student Life and located in the IU Hillel building, the center serves as both a cultural resource and a welcoming community space for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Its mission is to ensure Jewish students have opportunities to develop leadership potential, connect meaningfully with Judaism, and engage in academic, cultural, social, and community-based experiences.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary greeter at the front desk, welcoming students and visitors in a friendly, professional manner.
- Monitor and manage front desk operations, including answering the door and maintaining a welcoming environment.
- Facilitate student check-in processes and maintain accurate sign-in records.
- Respond to general inquiries and provide basic information about the Jewish Culture Center and Hillel programs.
- Provide administrative support, including light clerical tasks and general office assistance as needed.
- Assist with event and program logistics, including set-up and break-down of materials and spaces.
- Deliver high-quality customer service and contribute to a positive experience for all visitors.
- Assist with additional tasks or special projects as assigned.
- Support kitchen-related tasks during programs or events:
- Cook and assemble menu items following established standards.
- Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment; maintain proper sanitation practices.
- Assist cooks and other kitchen staff during meal service as needed.
- Ensure the kitchen is stocked with necessary supplies and cooking equipment; promptly notify supervisors of low inventory or equipment issues.
- Maintain a clean and functional kitchen by cleaning equipment, appliances, and work areas, removing trash, and sanitizing garbage containers.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, especially Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Comfortable interacting with a variety of people in professional or campus settings.
- Professionalism, dependability, and respect for others.
- Experience working independently on tasks.
- Situational awareness.
- Ability to effectively communicate and operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
- Involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and campus.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Customer service experience.
- Prior experience in an office setting.
- Food service or teamwork experience.
- Knowledge of preparation methods and practices for a variety of foods, and knowledge of basic kitchen sanitation methods and food safety practices.
Schedule
- Monday - Thursday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
- Friday: 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm
- 16 hours per week with additional hours available based on availability and department needs (no more than 29 hours per week across all IU jobs).
- Position available to start work on Monday, August 17, 2026, based on candidate availability.
