Part Time Structural Engineer

About the Role

This position provides senior-level structural design engineering support for the construction of marine structures, including port facilities, wharves, liquid cargo terminals, bridges, causeways, container terminals, cruise terminals, bulkheads, docks, piers, and marinas. The incumbent will supervise Engineers and Project Management team members while upholding Orion’s core values of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, all grounded in Integrity.

Responsibilities

• Work with the VP of Engineering and Structural Design team to achieve departmental business goals and objectives.
• Lead the growth and development of the team by providing mentorship, technical guidance, and participating in the hiring and evaluation of junior staff.
• Interface with engineering, project team members, and clients to fully understand requested engineering services.
• Apply extensive knowledge of principles and practices across broad areas of assigned engineering projects.
• Perform structural engineering analysis and design of new and existing marine structures (bulkheads, sheet-pile walls, retaining walls, concrete wharves, and mooring/breasting dolphins).
• Conduct finite element structural modeling of marine structures (using SAP or STAAD).
• Review complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.
• Develop new techniques and improved processes for design projects.
• Provide technical advice on safe designs and construction.
• Review and approve scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
• Prepare bid package proposals for upcoming engineering and project work.
• Represent the Company at industry-wide conferences and symposia.
• Ensure personal safety and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies.
• Stop work when unsafe conditions are observed and report violations promptly.
• Maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and trade secret information.

Requirements

• BS Degree in Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of eight (8) years of work experience.
• Prior experience in marine construction, heavy industrial, or engineering design industries is preferred.
• Working knowledge of Project Engineering Standards, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, and Safety and Environmental Compliance.
• Ability to quickly learn technical aspects of the business and communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
• High degree of personal integrity, discretion, and trustworthiness to maintain confidentiality.
• Strong organizational skills, diligence, and ability to work with minimal supervision as a self-starter.
• Flexibility to adjust to sudden changes in work priorities and reprioritize tasks accordingly.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in task execution.
