Utah State University Campus Security Unit is a non-sworn extension of the Utah State University Police Department (USUPD). Unarmed security officers serve the university community by providing services such as monitoring university property, security escorts, building lock/unlock, motor vehicle assists, event security, and campus patrol for commercial/residential buildings, stadiums, arenas, museums, and other facilities.

Schedule

The Security Unit operates 7 days a week from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, including State and Federal holidays. Shifts are determined by employee availability and USU Security needs. Part-time officers can work up to 28 hours per week. The unit, comprised mostly of students, allows schedule adjustments to accommodate school commitments. Officers are required to work pregame and game day security assignments for football, basketball, the Howl, and Mardi Gras.

Responsibilities

  • Providing security at campus events, including football and basketball games, and other student events.
  • Providing personal safety escorts for students.
  • Providing access to locked buildings.
  • Responding to non-law enforcement calls for service, such as fire alarms.
  • Assisting university faculty, staff, and students in various capacities.
  • Interfacing with other departments within public safety.
  • Operating and monitoring security cameras.
  • Communicating with USU facilities regarding utility problems, snow removal, etc.
  • Using a public safety radio and learning the Utah 10 Code.
  • Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid State Driver License, a clean driving history, and the ability to be insured to drive university vehicles.
  • No prior police or public safety experience required; all training will be provided on the job.

Pay

$16.00/hour

Work Environment

The work environment and physical requirements vary by assignment. Security officers may work indoors or outdoors:

  • Indoors: May include office/event spaces or public areas with protection from elements but not necessarily from temperature changes. Tasks may require repetitive hand motion (e.g., typing).
  • Outdoors: Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. May involve confined or narrow spaces for extended periods.

Additional conditions may include:

  • Exposure to loud noises, vibrations from equipment, and conditions affecting the respiratory system (e.g., fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
  • Physical demands such as bending, crawling, crouching, lifting/pushing/pulling objects up to 50 pounds, and walking/standing for long periods.
