About the role
The Medical Intensive Care Unit-1 (MICU-1) is a 16-bed unit located in West Alabama. Our environment is characterized by a strong team collaboration with nurses, intensivists, and multiple ancillary departments, evident through our multidisciplinary rounds.
Responsibilities
- Care for critically ill adult patients with conditions such as Acute Respiratory Failure, ARDS, Sepsis, Gastrointestinal Bleeds, DKA, Hypertensive Crisis, Acute/Chronic Renal Failure, and post-Cardiac Arrest requiring Targeted Temperature Management.
- Provide quality, compassionate care by maintaining professional nursing standards and fostering positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Supervise LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs, and other non-licensed staff, assessing patients' physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural needs, and managing pain.
- Evaluate and regularly reassess patient care, coordinating care planning with interdisciplinary teams to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assign and delegate nursing care to team members based on patient needs and their capabilities.
- Apply safety principles when providing care, accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in care plans, and participate in unit-based huddles.
- Participate in performance improvement activities, assist on PI teams, and support and implement changes necessary for improvement.
- Maintain initial and annual competency per job class according to DCH Standards.
- Maintain performance, patient, and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards, ensuring positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, colleagues, and oneself.
- Ensure patient, visitor, and employee safety by adhering to DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Perform essential job functions in a manner that promotes safety for all.
- Identify and address unsafe practices that could harm patients, visitors, and employees.
- Communicate clearly and accurately, delegate effectively, and manage conflict and stressful situations.
- Engage in face-to-face discussions with different personalities and handle unpleasant or aggressive individuals appropriately.
- Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
- Work in groups, perform structured and unstructured work, meet time pressures and timelines, and work extended shifts.
- Handle potential exposure to human body fluids, diseases, infections, lab chemicals, and hazardous materials or cleaning solutions, using appropriate protective and safety equipment.
Requirements
- Current approved Alabama Board of Nursing RN license or multi-state license required or ability to obtain prior to start.
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training required or obtain within 30 days of start date.
- BSN preferred, minimum Associates required.
- Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
