About the role

The Recreational Therapist plans, directs, and coordinates approved recreation programs for patients in treatment, conducts recreational therapy groups, and documents progress in accordance with treatment plan goals. This position coordinates and facilitates community-based activities for patients in PHP and IOP levels of care.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate recreational therapy groups and document session notes within 24 hours in accordance with treatment plan goals
  • Create evidence-based content for recreational therapy curriculum
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team to ensure 100% group attendance and participation
  • Observe, assess, and record patient participation and progress during recreational sessions
  • Plan, organize, and direct recreational activities to facilitate patient recovery and well-being, including off-site outings
  • Coordinate and facilitate activities committee meetings to ensure distribution of monthly activities calendar
  • Ensure inventory of supplies is provided on-site
  • Assist clinical team in developing treatment plans to meet recreational needs of patients
  • Use substance abuse and co-occurring therapeutic interventions and de-escalation techniques to help patients accomplish treatment goals
  • Prepare and submit reports and charts to treatment team reflecting patient progress
  • Use information from medical records, staff, and patients to assess patient capabilities and interests
  • Counsel and encourage patients to develop leisure activities
  • Evaluate effectiveness of services provided with assistance from the Clinical Director
  • Assist the clinical team with patient interventions when needed
  • Maintain positive relationships and healthy boundaries with all staff and patients
  • Accept feedback from supervisors and communicate significant patient developments
  • Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for staff and patients
  • Participate in Quality Improvement activities and contribute to organizational success
  • Pursue professional development through education and training programs
  • Contribute positively to staff morale and perform other tasks as assigned

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma required; postsecondary education preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience preferred
  • Good driving record that meets safety and company insurance standards
  • National or State Certification in Recreation Therapy required
  • CPR and Standard First Aid certification required

Skills

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of recreational therapy
  • Adherence to the Association for Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare Code of Ethics
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards
  • Proficiency in communication and written skills
  • Knowledge of state and federal statutes regarding patient confidentiality laws
  • Knowledge of Drug-Free Workplace Policies and Workplace Violence prevention

Schedule

1:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Monday, Friday, and Saturday (4th day will be your preference).
