Job Summary

This position is for a specialized, licensed Physician responsible for providing comprehensive psychiatric care, including the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional, behavioral, and psychological disorders for the IU Indianapolis student body. The psychiatrist delivers essential psychiatric services in support of CAPS, whose mission is to provide a comprehensive continuum of clinical mental health care and supportive services that promote student well-being and academic success.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides ongoing medication management (medication check)
  • Schedules appointments to monitor patient progress
  • Affirms treatment effectiveness and makes clinically appropriate adjustments
  • Works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary care team, including counselors, medical providers, and other stakeholders to ensure coordinated, high-quality, and ethically sound care
  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluations, including review of medical psychosocial histories, physical assessments as appropriate, and psychological testing when indicated
  • Determines diagnoses based on clinical findings and established diagnostic criteria; develops and implements individualized treatment plans, including psychopharmacological interventions and supportive psychotherapy
  • Prescribes and manages medication for mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary providers to review treatment plans and patient progress
  • Analyzes clinical data and test results to inform diagnosis and treatment decisions
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation in accordance with institutional policies, legal requirements, and best practices
  • Compiles and maintains comprehensive patient records, including medical histories, treatment plans, and official health documentation, ensuring all records meet regulatory and institutional standards

Qualifications

  • Required: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Required: Completion of an approved psychiatric residency
  • Required: Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Indiana

  • Ability to consistently apply advanced clinical judgment
  • Ability to adhere to professional and regulatory standards
  • Experience working with a diverse student population

Working Conditions / Demands

The role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around a clinic environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
