Part-Time Pet Shelter Advocate

Rose Brooks Center, a non-profit domestic violence agency, is seeking a Part-Time Pet Shelter Advocate to support the daily operations of the pet shelter facility and provide pet advocacy services for families in our emergency shelter.

About the role

This position works within a low-barrier, voluntary participation program, delivering survivor-centered, accessible, and trauma-informed advocacy to pet owners and their pets. The Pet Shelter Advocate collaborates with a multidisciplinary team across Rose Brooks Center programs and adheres to all agency policies and competencies while advancing our mission.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of the pet shelter facility.
• Provide advocacy services for families and their pets residing in the emergency shelter.
• Demonstrate proficiency in Rose Brooks Center competencies and commitment to the agency’s mission.
• Participate in required and optional trainings as determined.
• Attend scheduled staff and team meetings, which may occur outside of normal work hours.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Direct service experience with vulnerable populations, preferably working with survivors of domestic/sexual violence trauma.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and spend significant time standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
• General knowledge of animal health and behavioral issues.
• Knowledge of methods and procedures for managing an animal shelter or kenneling facility.
• Experience working with or in animal welfare agencies; comfort and confidence working with animals.
• Awareness of potentially dangerous situations when working with animals.
• Ability to work with animals of unknown disposition, including those exhibiting medical issues, aggression, or distress, and to respond calmly and independently.
• Strong teamwork, time-management, problem-solving, and organizational skills; ability to work independently.
• Proficiency in computer skills (MS Office, database, and security software).
• Valid driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, and ability to transport clients/pets as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• One or more years of animal welfare-related experience, preferably in a domestic violence agency.
• Knowledge of local animal welfare resources.
• Understanding of the link between domestic violence and pet abuse.
• Experience in domestic violence advocacy and safety planning.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Schedule

This is a part-time, non-exempt position scheduled Monday–Thursday, 8:00 AM–2:00 PM and/or 9:00 AM–3:00 PM. Hours may include mid/evening shifts, weekends, and holidays to accommodate participants’ needs.

Pay

This position starts at an hourly rate of $20.
