EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Aid in the routine intake of artifacts to determine their historical significance and catalog them.
  • Document and maintain information about the antiquities collection using museum management software (Past-Perfect).
  • Document and maintain a digital photo collection.
  • Research and provide recommendations for the preservation of antiquities.
  • Assist with the maintenance of historical artifacts and displays.
  • Create new historical displays throughout Strathearn Park.
  • Provide assistance with public and historical information requests.
  • Assist with updates to the park’s WIFI and virtual tour.
  • Assist with park site management and oversight.
  • Perform general office work and clerical duties.
  • Offer and/or assist with historical park tours and presentations.
  • Support Park District and Historical Society special events and fundraising activities.
  • Assist the Simi Valley Historical Society with the recruitment and training of volunteer docents.
  • May occasionally attend Simi Valley Historical Society, Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board, Museum Alliance of Ventura, and Park District Historical Society Committee meetings.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Requires an associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, History, Library Science, Archaeology, Anthropology, Social Studies, or a closely related field.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a municipal or school district setting with increased responsibility.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
    • Proactive, solution-oriented, and ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
    • Organizational skills, accuracy, meeting deadlines, good judgment, adaptability, effective communication, and maintaining professional relationships.
    • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Familiarity with antiquities and museum collection management software.
  • Requirements:
    • Retired educators, librarians, or those with historical park or museum operations experience are encouraged to apply.
    • Must possess a valid California driver's license with a good driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Standing and/or walking approximately 50% of the time.
  • Frequent lifting to 20 pounds.
  • Sometimes lifting, pushing/pulling loads to 40 pounds.
  • Some bending, kneeling/squatting, climbing stairs and/or ladders, reaching overhead/stretching.
  • Occasionally working on rough or uneven terrain.
  • Frequent handling and dexterity.
