Part-Time Medical Nurse Practitioner
Job Summary
The Medical Nurse Practitioner provides advanced, independent primary medical care to a designated patient population within the IMBH Department. Under indirect supervision, this role performs comprehensive health assessments, diagnoses and treats acute and chronic medical conditions, prescribes medications, and delivers preventive and educational services. The Nurse Practitioner collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure continuity of care, regulatory compliance, and high-quality patient outcomes in a secure correctional setting.
Responsibilities
- Performs comprehensive medical examinations, evaluations, and health assessments; diagnoses and manages acute and chronic medical conditions in a correctional healthcare environment.
- Obtains complete patient histories and develops individualized treatment plans, ensuring accuracy and completeness using the Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) format.
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, medications, and treatment regimens within the scope of licensure and in accordance with state law, facility protocols, and formulary guidelines.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic studies, including laboratory tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiological studies; modifies treatment plans based on results and clinical presentation.
- Manages overall patient care, including chronic disease management, preventive care, follow-up consultations, and coordination of specialty referrals as appropriate.
- Provides clinical consultation, guidance, and support to nursing staff and other healthcare team members.
- Supervises or coordinates patient care activities and clinical workflows as required to support safe and efficient operations.
- Participates in the planning and development of health programs, policies, and procedures to improve patient care and outcomes.
- Maintains complete, accurate, and timely medical records documenting all services rendered.
- Participate in quality assurance activities, quality improvement initiatives, peer review, and clinical training or in-service education.
Requirements
Knowledge of advanced practice nursing principles, patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Knowledge of pharmacology and the ability to prescribe medications within scope of practice. Knowledge of correctional healthcare clinical operations, substance abuse recovery, accreditation requirements, and regulatory standards. Ability to supervise, guide, and support clinical staff. Proficiency with electronic health record systems.
Qualifications
- Current Maine State Licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Current DEA Controlled Substance Registration.
- Current CPR Certification.
