About the role

The maintenance worker ensures the functioning of building systems, including fire/life safety, HVAC, lighting, mechanical, and plumbing systems, across all parish facilities. This role also maintains safe and clean grounds, oversees sidewalks and parking areas, performs light snow removal, and handles repairs in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, and painting.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the security of parish grounds, contacting the Pastor, Office Manager, Maintenance Manager, or local police in cases of damage or vandalism.
  • Perform maintenance services and small repairs in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, and painting.
  • Conduct general labor tasks such as sweeping, emptying waste baskets, trash removal, and cleaning with attention to detail, including daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules.
  • Supervise outside contractors for routine preventative activities like safety inspections, pest control, and facility system maintenance, with approval from the Office Manager.
  • Maintain a routine schedule for carpet cleaning and floor waxing.
  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and cameras; replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and other relevant meetings.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of parish supplies, including paper products, host, wine, candles, and other essential items.
  • Work with the Office Manager to secure multiple bids from vendors for services and repairs.
  • Ensure parish machinery is well-maintained and maintenance procedures are followed; prepare and submit a maintenance budget to the Finance Council.
  • Perform snow removal of sidewalks during winter and coordinate with contractors for assistance.
  • Clean gutters as needed.
  • Set up and clean up for funerals, baptisms, and other special events.
  • Inspect and clean spaces after use by groups.
  • Move mobile walls in the church balcony and Hardy Halls as needed.
  • Clean carpets, floors, pews, and altar areas after Sunday Masses and the chapel at least once a week or as needed.
  • Assist with seasonal decoration setup and takedown.
  • Maintain compliance with fire inspector expectations and implement recommendations; meet yearly with the fire inspector for inspection.
  • Meet with village representatives for yearly inspections.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Pastor and Office Manager.
  • Work in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of general high school subjects, including basic math and English skills.
  • Preferred: High school graduate, GED, or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in maintenance or a related area.
  • Knowledgeable in facilities and grounds maintenance procedures and safety measures.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, painting, plastering, machine servicing, or electrical work.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 50 lbs; climb ladders and stairs as necessary.
  • Availability to work extra time as needed.

Pay

This position has an hourly range of $20.00–$30.00. Pay within the range is based on relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, location, and business needs.
