About the Role

A Cook at Carpenter Hotel will exceed guest expectations through food preparation, cooking, and seasoning of all menu items while maintaining Health Department Standards. This role requires excellent communication, conflict resolution, and a strong understanding of Bunkhouse policies. The Cook is responsible for upholding the company’s culture, values, and reputation among staff, guests, vendors, and partners.

About the Organization

Opened in fall 2018, Carpenter Hotel is a South Austin retreat nestled in an old pecan grove near Zilker Park. The hotel features 93 rooms with private terraces, a pool with a community deck, and the Q Hut pavilion. Guests can enjoy fare from the all-day Coffee Bar or dine in Carpenters Hall, the on-site restaurant. The location offers easy access to Lady Bird Lake, downtown Austin, and local attractions.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a variety of foods according to customer orders or supervisor instructions, following approved procedures.
  • Prep food items for after-hours distribution.
  • Clean work areas, equipment, utensils, dishes, and silverware.
  • Store food in designated containers and areas to prevent spoilage.
  • Transport food supplies, equipment, and utensils to and from storage and work areas.
  • Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure safe, sanitary practices.
  • Test foods for doneness using methods such as tasting, smelling, or piercing with utensils.
  • Portion, arrange, and garnish food, and serve it to waitstaff or patrons.
  • Regulate oven, broiler, grill, and roaster temperatures.
  • Estimate food consumption, requisition or purchase supplies, or procure food from storage.
  • Consult with supervisory staff to plan menus, considering costs and special event needs.
  • Maintain positive relationships with employees and guests.
  • Ensure open communication with all departments and upper management via email, logbooks, and meetings.
  • Maintain high cleanliness and safety standards in the work area.
  • Keep equipment in good, safe working condition.
  • Stay aware of safety issues, emergency procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Attend relevant meetings and adhere to all operational standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to meet operational demands and exceed customer expectations.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of related experience in hospitality or the service industry.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) of the workplace.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and staff across sister properties.
