Part-Time Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Position Description
St. John’s University is seeking a compassionate and qualified Licensed Mental Health Counselor to join the CAPS team on a part-time, hourly basis. This role is ideal for a dedicated clinician interested in supporting college students' mental health and wellness through evening and weekend services. The counselor will provide direct clinical services, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, and outreach programming. Services will be offered primarily during evenings and on weekends to best meet student needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide short-term, goal-oriented individual counseling to a diverse student population.
- Conduct crisis intervention and risk assessments; provide referrals as needed.
- Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation in accordance with ethical and legal standards.
- Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Student Affairs, Residence Life, Academic Advising) as needed for coordinated student care.
- Participate in outreach and wellness events that promote mental health awareness.
- Uphold confidentiality and ethical practices in alignment with professional standards and university policy.
- Attend required staff meetings and supervision, as scheduled.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Active and unrestricted licensure in the state (e.g., LMHC, LCSW, LPC, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 1 year of post-licensure clinical experience, preferably in a college or young adult setting.
- Strong clinical skills in assessment, crisis response, and brief counseling.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, international students, and students with disabilities.
- Strong diagnostic and therapeutic skills, particularly using short-term treatment interventions.
- Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to collaborate with other departments and college administrators.
- Strong crisis assessment and crisis management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Pay
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $57.00. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
