About the Role

Appointments from the part-time pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term, so applicants must be available on very short notice. Positions are available as determined by need and funding during Fall and/or Spring semesters of the 2026–2027 academic year, which begins August 17, 2026. Teaching assignments are contingent upon budget and enrollments.

Assignments may include teaching first-year composition and may also include teaching advanced composition (including classes for multilingual learners), technical and professional writing, linguistics, creative writing, and some General Education literature classes.

Pay

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges are:

  • Lecturer A: $5,507–$6,677 per month
  • Lecturer B: $6,221–$13,224 per month
  • Lecturer C: $6,825–$14,523 per month
  • Lecturer D: $8,593–$15,221 per month

Due to CSU policies, the person hired must reside in the state of California at the time of hire and for the entirety of the appointment.

Requirements

  • M.A. in English (or equivalent) or M.F.A.
  • Demonstrated college teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English.
  • Experience teaching composition.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
  • Relevant work experience and professional capabilities.

Special Conditions

  • All CSU employees are designated "mandated reporters" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) is required following a conditional offer of employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in withdrawal of the offer.
  • Current employees offered positions on campus will undergo a background check for any position designated as sensitive.
  • Cal Poly is a smoke & tobacco-free campus.
