Part-Time Instructor, Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

About the Role

Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications.

Faculty have key responsibilities including professional development, collegial responsibilities, active participation in efforts focused on the College’s operational success, communication, and safety.

This position involves teaching lecture and/or laboratory portions of mental health and other courses in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, adhering to the stated course objectives, content, and delivery as part of the approved program curriculum.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate student learning and improve student success.
• Assess learning outcomes and teaching effectiveness.
• Adhere to professional ethical standards and maintain required licensures and certifications.

• Actively participate in efforts focused on the College’s operational success.
• Teach lecture and/or laboratory portions of mental health and other Occupational Therapy Assistant program courses.
• Follow stated course objectives, content, and delivery methods.

Requirements

• Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)-accredited program for occupational therapy assistants.
• Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) with a Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field or education.
• Educational credentials must be from accredited institutions.
• At least three years of recent, relevant, full-time clinical experience.
• Currently credentialed as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).
• Proof of licensure/credential and maintenance of same as a condition of employment (Perkins grant funding requirement).
• Current Michigan COTA licensure or eligibility for Michigan licensure prior to hire.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.
• Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission, and philosophy.
• Innovative, flexible, and positive teaching style with an understanding of the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

Skills

• Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with probability and statistical inference.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Technology Skills: Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.
• Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on objectives and student needs. Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with students, peers, staff, and administrators. Strong oral and written communication skills.

Additional Qualifications

• Teaching experience at the community college level.
• Familiarity with computer-based instruction, distance learning, learning technologies, competency-based instruction, and modularized courseware.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

• Must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and remain stationary about 1/3 of the time.
• Must be mobile around campus for participant involvement and activities.
• Must be able to converse regularly with individuals via phone, face-to-face, or written documentation.
• Must be able to independently and efficiently use computer programs, particularly the internet, Word, and student databases.
• Must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
• Must tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals common to the industry, handle and mix chemicals safely, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Schedule

Faculty are required to be available as outlined in the faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and will make additional provisions for student consultations as necessary and reasonable. Must be available to teach onsite; opportunities do not exist to teach online courses only.
