Part-Time History Instructor (Pool)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Pay
Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Initial placement ranges:
- Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB): $89.20 – $130.94 per hour
- Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC): $103.85 – $151.07 per hour
Assignments are semester-based and offered as needed.
Responsibilities
- Teach classes as assigned from the regular History Department curriculum
- Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
- Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
- Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and institutional needs
The College offers day and evening classes.
Requirements
- Master’s or higher in history
- OR Bachelor’s in history AND Master’s or higher in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women’s studies, social science, or ethnic studies
- OR demonstrated equivalency through degree, academic background, or professional achievement (see below)
- Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

- Degree Equivalency: A degree with similar content to those listed, where the degree title or coursework differs slightly
- Academic Background Equivalency: At least 24 semester units in the academic field, plus:
- A broad cultural education (typically met by general education requirements for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree)
- A detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor (typically met by coursework required for the degree major)
- Professional Achievement Equivalency: Evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the field, including:
- Preparation, teaching experience, work experience, publications, portfolios, speaking engagements, and ability equivalent to those expected from a candidate meeting the minimum qualifications
Qualifications
- Knowledge of and recent successful experience teaching (or preparation to teach) college-level courses in one or more of the following areas:
- Western Civilization
- U.S. History Survey
- African American History
- Latinos in the U.S.
- Race, Ethnicity and Immigration
- Women’s U.S. History
- Familiarity with teaching methods that emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and active learning to encourage independent, creative thinking and higher-order skills
- Proficiency in using technology for teaching
- Commitment to the role and purpose of the community college and the division’s established academic standards
- Ability to:
- Organize and explain materials for students with varying abilities, preparation levels, and cultural backgrounds
- Develop instructional learning outcomes and assess student achievement
- Teach theoretical and practical applications of the subject matter
- Commitment to using writing as an evaluative assessment and integrating writing skills across the curriculum
Work Demands
- Environment: Typical on-site office environment; in-person work expected with potential to participate in the District’s telework program
- Frequent hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and online

- Upper limb dexterity to operate computers and peripheral equipment

Position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and a Responsible Employee under the Equity in Education Act and Title IX.
