Part Time Golf Course Grounds Worker - Lyon Oaks

About the Role

Oakland County Parks is hiring Golf Course Grounds Workers to maintain Lyon Oaks Golf Course in Wixom, MI. This seasonal position is limited to 1,000 hours per year and involves outdoor work, including operating groundskeeping equipment and performing general maintenance tasks to ensure the golf course and park facilities are well-maintained for public and private use.

Responsibilities

• Operate groundskeeping equipment such as lawn mowers, tractors, and vehicles for grounds maintenance tasks.
• Perform groundskeeping and building maintenance tasks, including landscaping, trash removal, and upkeep of park properties and rental facilities.
• Move facility and recreation equipment, including picnic tables, trash cans, folding tables, chairs, and golf carts.
• Use maintenance equipment such as rakes, shovels, trimmers, and commercial blowers.
• Groom and clean parks and related facilities, patrol park areas, and assist park users.
• Perform duties of other part-time seasonal employees as needed to meet staffing requirements.
• Follow proper work procedures and safety practices.
• Work assigned shifts, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays, which may vary (day, afternoon, or midnight).
• Utilize Countywide and/or department-specific software to complete assignments.
• When assigned to a golf course:
  • Perform golf course mowing using power equipment, bunker maintenance, trash removal, tree maintenance (planting, pruning, line trimming), and custodial services in restrooms and public areas.
  • Assist with cart staging and cleaning when lower-level staff are unavailable.
  • Assist with repair and installation of irrigation equipment or start-up/shut-down of golf course irrigation systems.
• Answer public inquiries regarding other County parks.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old, or at least 16 years old and a high school graduate (or meet State G.E.D. requirements), or be an emancipated minor.
• When assigned to the Golf Course Pro Shop, Grill rooms, or Beverage Cart, must be at least 18 years old due to the sale of alcoholic beverages.
• Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out-of-country license holders must obtain a valid Michigan license before the hire date.
• Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.
• Maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.

Qualifications

• Reasonable knowledge of customer service interactions and ability to communicate with others.
• Some knowledge of the use of elementary hand and power tools.
• Reasonable knowledge of and ability to practice standard safety techniques.
• Ability to perform routine, repetitive, and/or manual tasks while maintaining personal cleanliness and a presentable public appearance.
• Ability to follow standardized oral and written instructions and work cooperatively in a team.

Skills

• Ability to communicate effectively to convey information accurately.
• Ability to operate equipment such as computers, phones, hand tools, power tools (weed whips, blowers), snow throwers, motorized grounds-keeping tractors, ride-on mowers, golf carts, and other maintenance vehicles.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to heat, cold, and other weather elements.

Pay

$16.04 per hour.
