Part-Time Fire Protection Technology Instructor (Pool)

This is a part-time, associate faculty pool position. Applications are continually accepted and reviewed on an as-needed basis.

About the Role

This position is a part-time role as an Associate Instructor in the discipline of Fire Technology, with a special emphasis on teaching Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) classes and California State Fire Marshal courses. The teaching assignment may include lecture-discussion courses during day, evening, or on Saturday, and/or in an online/distance education format. Assignments are as needed during Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters. This position is represented by the West Valley-Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554). Work location is Mission College, Santa Clara, CA.

Pay

Salary is based on a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full-time load, and is prorated based on an initial hiring salary range of $36,191 – $52,297 per semester. Salary is determined by academic achievement, teaching, and related experience.

Requirements

• Possess any one of the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience; OR
  • An associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR
  • A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline.
• Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience teaching in an approved Firefighter 1 Academy
• Registered instructor with California State Fire Training
• Experience with developing or revising Fire Tech curriculum
• Previous experience as an EMT instructor
• Career experience as a firefighter/fire officer
• Skills Evaluator or Lead Skills Evaluator through State Fire Training

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in-class or online/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students, and maintenance of currency in subjects taught.
• Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
• Submit attendance rosters and grade reports when due.
• Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
• Maintain office hours each week (0.5 hours per week per section).
• Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies, and programs of the District and college.
• Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course.
• Refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services.
• Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the instructor’s area of expertise.
• Work cooperatively within the college community.
• Foster an environment that protects academic freedom and is free from harassment, prejudice, and bias.
• Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual.

The successful candidate may be expected to obtain and maintain additional teaching certifications as required by the California State Fire Marshal and/or California State Training Institute.
