Position Information

A HVAC Apprenticeship Faculty member plays a crucial role in training and educating apprentices in the HVAC-R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) field. This position combines instructional responsibilities with hands-on training to prepare apprentices for successful careers as skilled HVAC-R technicians. This position focuses on delivering quality instruction, providing mentorship, and supporting apprentices' learning through practical and theoretical coursework.

Position Details

  • Education/Qualifications:
    • An associate’s degree or higher degree in an HVAC-R field is preferred.
    • A minimum of 7 years of progressive industry experience as an HVAC-R technician, 3 years must be documented as a licensed journeyman and 567 hours of related HVAC-R classroom instruction.
    • A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 and 2 above.
    • Master Specialist license preferred.
    • Prior teaching experience or training in vocational education is preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of HVAC-R systems, codes, standards, and safety practices.
    • Effective communication skills and the ability to engage and motivate apprentices in a classroom and hands-on environment.
    • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and the workplace.
    • Ability to adapt teaching methods and curriculum to accommodate different learning styles and educational backgrounds.
    • Experience with online teaching platforms and instructional technologies for hybrid or online courses (preferred).
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Collaborate with departmental colleagues to enhance course content, lesson plans and instructional resources to integrate new technologies, and to update curriculum to reflect advancements in the field and assessment of student learning objectives (SLOs).
    • Ensure that teaching methods and materials are relevant, up-to-date, and aligned with industry standards and apprenticeship program goals.
    • Deliver engaging and interactive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training sessions to apprentices in various aspects of HVAC-R systems.
    • Teach courses covering HVAC-R principles, equipment installation, maintenance procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and safety practices.
    • Evaluate apprentices’ understanding and mastery through assignments, quizzes, exams, and practical assessments.
    • Provide timely constructive feedback to apprentices on their learning progress, skill development, and areas for improvement.
    • Offer guidance and support to apprentices regarding academic and career development.
    • Assist apprentices in understanding and applying theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios and real-world HVAC-R systems.
    • Stay informed about industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes relevant to the HVAC-R field.
    • Collaborate with industry partners, HVAC-R contractors, and professional associations to enhance apprenticeship training opportunities.
    • Participate in departmental meetings, curriculum and faculty development initiatives, and accreditation processes as requested.
    • Use of Canvas as a Learning Management System (LMS) is required for all courses. Applicants must have a laptop computer with reliable access WIFI. Faculty must adhere to NWCCD’s Canvas Course requirements while ensuring demonstrable and documented regular effective contact with students.
  • Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
    • Must possess physical ability to perform the duties of a licensed HVAC-R technician.
    • Vision: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
    • Must be able to lift 60 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
    • Must possess physical ability to perform the typical duties of an electrician: kneeling, crouching, stooping, bending, twisting, and climbing ladders.
    • May need to operate materials handling equipment.
    • May work in environments with moderate or loud noise.
    • Must be available to meet course training schedule. Schedule may include day, evening, fully online, hybrid (partially online), and/or weekend courses.
    • Work will primarily be in classrooms and laboratories equipped with advanced manufacturing equipment.
    • Part-time faculty meetings are conducted the week prior to the semester start. Course outlines of record, student learning outcomes to be assessed, and department policies will be provided or reviewed.
    • May include part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as needed basis.
    • Supervisory and Management Responsibility:
      • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and apprentice progress.
      • Participate in program meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as required.
      • Report apprentice progress to appropriate agency(ies) and industry sponsors.
