About the Role

Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is seeking instructors to lead pairs of COM 117 Multimedia Storytelling Labs during the Fall 2026 semester. Each pair of labs is taught in conjunction with a main teaching section led by a lead instructor and is paid for the equivalent of one credit hour.

Available lab section pairs:

  • Tuesday 5:00pm–6:20pm & Tuesday 6:30pm–7:50pm
  • Wednesday 5:15pm–6:35pm & Wednesday 6:45pm–8:05pm
  • Thursday 5:00pm–6:20pm & Thursday 6:30pm–7:50pm
  • Friday 9:30am–10:50am & Friday 11:15am–12:35pm
  • Friday 11:15am–12:35pm & Friday 12:45pm–2:05pm
  • Friday 12:45pm–2:05pm & Friday 2:15pm–3:35pm

Labs meet during the first five weeks of the semester to equip students with foundational skills for the main class.

Course Description

COM 117 is a required foundation course for all Newhouse School majors. Students collaborate in teams of three to produce short films that persuade, document, and entertain predefined audiences. In the main class, students learn basic story structure, script writing, digital photography, videography, and editing for sound and picture. Lab instructors will teach Adobe Premiere and mobile-phone video production for narrative, documentary, and advertising projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a syllabus and order required books and materials before the first day of class.
  • Prepare and deliver lab sessions focused on Adobe Premiere and mobile-phone video production.
  • Hold weekly office hours to meet with students.
  • Grade student assignments and examinations in a timely manner.
  • Submit mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Familiarity with story development and the production process for persuasive, non-fiction, and fiction storytelling.
  • Ability to evaluate student script writing and video editing for team projects.
  • Proficiency in digital photography, video, and audio.
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to instruct in-person lab sessions on assigned days.
  • Ability to hold office hours on campus.
  • Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

Tools/Equipment

  • Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, including computers, projectors, and document cameras.
