About the role
A part-time custodian position is available with the Facilities Management department in the Racquet & Fitness Center at Ferris State University’s Big Rapids campus. The role is classified as continuing part-time, not expected to convert to full-time, and requires working 20–28 hours per week with primary hours from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, Monday through Friday; occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Responsibilities
- Sweep, wet mop, refinish hard surface floors, clean carpet, and vacuum.
- Wash walls, woodwork, windows, blinds, mirrors, bathroom fixtures, furniture, chalk/white boards; climb ladders as needed.
- Disinfect restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
- Replenish paper and soap products.
- Report needed maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Replace light bulbs, globes, tubes, and light lenses.
- Set up and arrange tables, chairs, and related furniture for classes, conferences, offices, and special events.
- Empty waste baskets and trash containers; gather and dispose of trash and debris from assigned areas, including perimeters.
- Minimize waste of cleaning supplies and related materials.
- Remove snow and ice from entrances; apply salt as necessary.
- Open and close assigned buildings, classrooms, and offices.
- Check fire extinguishers and related equipment as scheduled; report deficiencies.
- Maintain current knowledge of bloodborne pathogen policies and procedures.
- Use a household plunger to clear commodes, urinals, and sink drains without dismantling fixtures.
- Change linens, make beds, and bunk/debunk beds.
- Respond to emergency custodial requests, including blood and body fluid cleanup.
- Carry, distribute, and deliver custodial supplies and equipment as assigned.
- Work with cleaning chemicals and equipment following safe-handling procedures and wearing required protective equipment.
- Move custodial equipment and fill in for vacant positions as needed.
- Operate a university or personal vehicle safely while performing job duties; authorize and maintain a valid driving record check per university policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the position classification.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
Qualifications
- No prior custodial experience required; training will be provided.
- Any related custodial experience is beneficial.
