Part Time Broadcast Engineer

About the role

New York Public Radio, home to WNYC, WQXR, New Jersey Public Radio, WNYC Studios, Gothamist and The Greene Space, is seeking two part-time Broadcast Engineers in our Programming Department. These positions will support breaking news, local news, and provide production and technical support to the broadcast teams on the weekend. The station needs one engineer to support the morning shift and one engineer to support the afternoon/evening shift, both on the weekend.

Broadcast Engineers are the technical professionals at the heart of New York Public Radio. They operate studio equipment alongside reporters and producers in the creation of live broadcasts, podcasts, in-person performances, videos and more in service of NYPR’s public service mission. These Broadcast Engineer positions will run the live control board for New York Public Radio’s signature shows on the weekends, and will also assist on all other production needs within the Programming Department. This position will report to the Director of Broadcast Operations in the WNYC Programming Department.

The successful candidate will have a good sense of the New York Public Radio sound, some knowledge of New York Public Radio programs, superior attention to detail, and a background in live audio production. The position requires excellent people skills as much of the job will require interfacing with content producers at NYPR.

Responsibilities

• Operate the board during local broadcasts on weekend live shows, fundraisers, and breaking news events.
• Support the on‑air hosts at all times.
• Record live interviews with both in studio and remote guests.
• Use digital audio work tools to produce and mix stories for air.
• Update news content for breaking news.
• Communicate with Programming, News and Broadcast Technology colleagues throughout the weekends.
• Provide disaster recovery support.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience in live audio production, preferably live radio production.
• Familiarity with the sound of New York Public Radio or public radio generally.
• Familiarity with the Zetta On‑Air Delivery system is helpful.
• Fluency in audio editing, knowledge of live on‑air board protocols and other systems for broadcast/digital delivery of audio.
• Experience using ISDN, AoIP or phone hybrids.
• Ability to work within a highly collaborative team in a fast‑paced environment.
• Excellent communication skills.

Pay

This is a part-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $38.85.

The morning shift runs Saturdays and Sundays from 6am to 2pm (16 hours/week at $38.86/hour; $32,331.52/year).

The afternoon/evening shift runs Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and one additional day (Friday) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (25 hours/week at $38.86/hour; approximately $50,518/year), with additional production support and fill-in responsibilities.

Schedule

• Morning shift: Saturdays and Sundays, 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
• Afternoon/evening shift: Fridays 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 12:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
