Part Time Animal Control Officer

About the role

Perform routine and complex public-safety work in the enforcement of animal-control ordinances.

Responsibilities

• Patrol streets to locate stray, abandoned, lost, or injured animals.
• Capture animals and transport them to the animal shelter.
• Respond to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal-control ordinances, including animals running at large, bites, general nuisances, vicious animals, property damage, or injuries.
• Remove dead, injured, or dangerous animals from public and private property.
• Care for, feed, and house animals at the animal shelter on an as-needed basis.
• Observe animals in custody for indications of disease.
• Provide maintenance and upkeep for equipment and vehicles.
• Investigate violations of animal-control ordinances and issue warnings or citations as required; appear in court to testify regarding animal-control cases.
• Serve various criminal or civil notices or papers related to enforcement of animal-control ordinances.
• Assist other city departments regarding animal-related incidents.
• Assist the public in redemption and adoption of impounded animals from the kennel.
• Work an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action, handling difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
• Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
• Maintain contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations, and provide general information about department activities.
• Appear in court if necessary.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• MACA certification or ability to obtain it within six months of hire.
• Valid Missouri driver’s license.
• Minimum of 6 months experience handling or caring for animals in a shelter environment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Physical demands

• Occasionally required to run, overcome physical barriers, subdue animals, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
• Frequently works in outside weather conditions.
• Occasionally works near mechanical parts, in high or precarious places, with dead or diseased animals, exposed to wet and humid conditions, with little risk for injury other than animal bites.

Pay

$26.13 per hour
