PARKS GROUNDSKEEPER

About the role

Incumbents are primarily responsible for maintaining County parks, grounds surrounding County Library facilities, disposal sites, recreational facilities, scenic drives, and other grounds surrounding County buildings. Some positions may be assigned to the American Avenue Disposal Site in Kerman (approximately 23 miles west of Fresno); those employees must provide their own transportation, as auto expenses and travel time are not covered. In addition to assignments at the disposal site, employees will assist in seasonal landscape maintenance at closed County disposal sites. Positions may require overtime, weekends (including Sundays), and holidays.

Minimum qualifications

• Experience: One (1) year of full‑time, paid work experience maintaining parks, grounds, or lawns; landscaping; or farming that included planting, irrigating, and fertilizing.
• License: Possession of a valid Class “C” driver’s license, or equivalent.
• Other: Candidates may be required to participate in the County’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program, which includes an initial and subsequent random testing as required by Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

Selection process

• Applicants may be required to complete an examination process.
• Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of three months and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
• The eligible list may be extended up to 12 months and may be used to fill both extra‑help and permanently allocated positions.
• Individuals selected for extra‑help appointments may be transitioned to permanently allocated positions later, as authorized by Fresno County Personnel Rules.

Reasonable accommodations & physical demands

This classification is in Medical Group III – Heavy Physical Activity. The position requires heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk, with frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking, are involved. Physical stamina and occasional explosive strength may be required, depending on specific assignments.
