Description

The County of San Mateo is currently seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Parks Director - Unclassified. This position is not governed by Civil Service Rules.

About the Role

The Parks Director oversees the management and maintenance of county parks, ensuring they are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all users. This includes planning, implementing, and evaluating park programs and facilities. The successful candidate will lead a team of park rangers, facility managers, and other staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management and maintenance of county parks, ensuring they are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all users.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate park programs and facilities.
  • Lead a team of park rangers, facility managers, and other staff members.
  • Navigate internal and external stakeholder relationships to successfully implement complex projects.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to parks and recreation.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation administration, urban planning, environmental science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in parks and recreation management.
  • A valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Experience managing budgets and overseeing staff.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to navigate internal and external stakeholder relationships.

  • Proven experience in leading and managing teams.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to parks and recreation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
