About the Role

This position involves semi-skilled maintenance and repair work across multiple trades, building and ground maintenance, equipment operation, and supervision of lower-level employees in a park setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades.
  • Conduct building and ground maintenance and cleaning activities.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on power-driven mechanical equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, line trimmers, and power saws.
  • Operate and maintain mechanical systems including fire detection and protection, HVAC, and water treatment systems.
  • Assist with pruning and tree trimming using chain saws, stump grinders, bucket trucks, and chippers.
  • Assist with traffic control and vehicle parking.
  • Build and repair roads, paths, picnic tables, benches, trails, and park equipment.
  • Assign, supervise, review, train, and evaluate the work of lower-level employees.
  • Respond to emergency situations by applying emergency procedures, directing staff, and assisting patrons.
  • Maintain records for daily maintenance, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and personal timekeeping.
  • Assist in snow removal, shoveling, and operate snow plow vehicles during winter months.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Enforce park rules and ensure proper customer service by directing staff and interacting with patrons.
  • Assist in other areas of park operations as needed.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility; OR
  • One year of experience in any of the following fields:
    • Law enforcement or security
    • Firefighting
    • Emergency Medical Services
    • Environmental education or stewardship
    • Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
    • Historic preservation or interpretation
    • Landscaping or grounds maintenance
  • One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces; OR
  • Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university; OR
  • Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program; OR
  • Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

Operating Needs

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license allowing operation of a vehicle in New York State.
  • Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
  • Must be able to work a variable schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Must be able to operate a chainsaw and complete OPRHP Sawyer Training or equivalent within the probationary period.
  • Must obtain a Grade "C" Water Operator's Certification within the probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing facility and operations work in a park setting or related field.

Positions located within Westchester County are eligible for an additional $4,000 annual Mid-Hudson adjustment.
