About the role

The Park Ranger serves as a positive presence at Bob & Crystal Rilee Park and other park locations throughout Chehalem Park and Recreation District. The position is responsible for visitor safety, education of visitors, responding to park incidents and emergencies, and monitoring of park facilities, trail systems, and natural areas. This role involves creating a safe and welcoming environment, interacting with park visitors, sharing information about parks resources and history, working with volunteers, and ensuring compliance with and enforcement of park rules. The Park Ranger works on varied tasks requiring discretion and judgement to provide efficient and effective services. This position receives direct supervision from the Basic Services Supervisor and may exercise limited supervision over part-time employees or volunteers.

Responsibilities

• Ensure visitor safety and provide education to park visitors.
• Respond to park incidents and emergencies.
• Monitor park facilities, trail systems, and natural areas.
• Create a safe and welcoming environment for all park visitors.
• Interact with visitors and share information about park resources and history.
• Work with volunteers and ensure compliance with park rules.
• Perform varied tasks requiring discretion and judgement.

Requirements

• 2 or more years of demonstrated experience ensuring visitation areas or facilities are safe and welcoming.
• 1 or more years of demonstrated experience working as interpretive, visitation, safety, or enforcement personnel in a public park or facility setting for a local, state, or federal agency.
• Possess first aid and CPR training, or have the ability to complete training within 3 months of hire date.

• 2 or more years of professional experience working as interpretive, visitation, safety, or enforcement personnel in a public park or facility setting for a local, state, or federal agency.
• 2 or more years of experience working in a safety or enforcement setting.
• Fluent in English and Spanish. Fluency in other languages is also desirable.

Specialist III Qualifications

• 5 or more years of demonstrated experience ensuring visitation areas or facilities are safe and welcoming.
• 5 or more years of experience working as interpretive, visitation, safety, or enforcement personnel in a public park or facility setting for a local, state, or federal agency.
• 3 or more years of experience working in a safety or enforcement setting.

Pay

$22.02 - $35.86 per hour (Grade 6 – 7 of Employee Pay Plan), dependent on experience.

Schedule

This is a part-time position, typically working up to 12–24 hours per week. The position requires a flexible working schedule, including weekends, early mornings, and evenings. Hours may vary based on operational needs, seasonal changes, and other requirements.
