Park Manager 2 (NY HELPS) Jones Beach
About the Role
Under the direction of the Park Ops Manager 1, the Park Manager 2 serves as first in command for the Operational Support work unit and oversees the Central Revenue and Payroll/Personnel Departments as well as the Storehouse.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate all aspects of departmental operation, including but not limited to tour fund management, point of sale management, conducting agency and concession cash count and personnel audits, invoicing outside groups for park use or VUF, maintenance of departmental office space, assisting with special events, and public relations.
- Plan, assign, and assist with the creation and completion of parkwide projects, and perform various health and safety, security, maintenance, and operational duties.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate seasonal and permanent staff to ensure assigned tasks are completed correctly, safely, and in a timely fashion.
- Ensure completion of equipment inventory and the submittal of weekly and monthly reports, including but not limited to monthly revenue and attendance, point of sale data, vehicle fuel usage, hazardous chemical inventory, vehicle and equipment mileage, and fire extinguisher inspections.
- Ensure adequate coverage for recruitment events for hiring.
- Oversee the NPS budget-tracking parkwide spending as well as logging all utility costs.
- Maintain accurate inventory of park supplies and ensure that commodities are purchased and stocked as needed, including fuel (gas and diesel) as well as lifeguard uniforms and equipment for the region.
- Additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS) or 55-b/c. Candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position:
- Option A: Seven years of experience working in a park, recreational facility, or campus, including two years of managerial experience.
- Option B: A bachelor's or higher-level degree in environmental education, environmental management, environmental policy, environmental sustainability, forestry, golf course management, historic preservation, horticulture, natural resources management, park administration, park management, or recreation management AND three years of experience working within a park, recreational facility, or campus, including two years of managerial experience.
A park, recreational facility, or campus is defined as a location that offers at least three of the following elements: athletic facilities, skating rink, campgrounds, golf courses, hiking trails, historic structures, marinas, picnic areas, playgrounds, recreation programs, swimming facilities, or education, environmental, or interpretive programming.
Managerial experience is defined as directing or administering at least three of the following functional areas within a park, recreational facility, or campus: administration (business, personnel, finance); environmental education/interpretation; maintenance; planning; programming; or public relations/visitor services.
Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If your degree was awarded outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.
Additional Eligibility Paths
- Eligible List: Currently reachable on the Park Manager 2 eligible lists.
- Reassignment: Current New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) employee with one year of permanent, competitive, or 55-b/55-c service as a Park Manager 2, SG-21.
- Transfer: One year of permanent, contingent permanent, or 55 B/C service in a title eligible for transfer. Approved titles are available through Civil Service GOT-IT.
- Non-Competitive Promotion (NCP): OPRHP employees in the promotion field with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Park Manager 1.
Skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Ability to research products via the internet.
- Ability to follow directions and communicate positively with staff and patrons.
- Ability to operate a variety of driven machinery.
- Physically able to perform medium to heavy manual labor.
Schedule
Must be available to work a variable schedule that includes weekends, holidays, and/or evening shifts.
Pay
The hiring rate is $82,126 (combining the statutory hiring rate for PS&T Grade 21 of $78,126 with a $4,000 Downstate Adjustment). The job rate is $103,056 (combining the statutory job rate of $99,056 with a $4,000 Downstate Adjustment).
