Description

The Parent's Education Registered Nurse at Holy Name is responsible for providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. This role includes leading group educational classes for expectant parents and conducting bedside lactation rounds daily.

  • Creates a milieu that promotes learning for staff and patients
  • Consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems
  • Selects appropriate breastfeeding related supplies for retail sale and for rental
  • Plays an active role in communication and decision-making activities of the Lactation team and the maternity services
  • Plans, organizes, and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, both in-patient and outpatient
  • Plans, organizes, and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, in the Parent Education classes
  • Conducts quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program
  • Serves as an advocate for patient safety and education upon discharge to home after delivery of an infant
  • Coordinates discharge needs and planning for every patient on postpartum inclusive of, but not limited to, all discharge teaching regarding care of the mother and infant, coordination of follow up appointments, and communication with physicians regarding anticipated discharge needs of both the mother and infant
  • Creates a discharge list daily for the following day and ensures that all necessary testing is scheduled and completed, as to avoid delay in discharge the following day
  • Discusses the discharge process with each family the day prior to anticipated discharge and coordinates scheduled time frame for education and discharge home
  • Reviews all IEM cards prior to submission to the laboratory for processing at the state level
  • Completes and documents all required IEM follow up
  • Reviews hearing screening results and ensures any and all follow up required with both parents and the primary pediatrician
  • Removes cord clamp and infant security tag immediately prior to discharge from the unit
  • Completes discharge follow up phone call on each patient and reports findings to Nurse Manager of LDRP
  • Participates in the Parent’s Education program by teaching assigned courses and providing hospital tours to expectant families

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Bachelor's Degree BSN required
  • Master's Degree MSN preferred

Experience

  • Previous experience with maternal-child health nursing
  • 4-6 years 3-5 years of experience in lactation consulting required

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Demonstrates ability to lead, organize, manage, and develop lactation programs
  • Ability to successfully assist mothers with breastfeeding skills
  • Ability to work with several different patient care units and levels of care providers
  • Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility in accepting work assignments

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure
  • Must be licensed to practice nursing in the state of New Jersey upon hire
  • IBCLC - International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
  • Currently certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) preferred
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support upon hire required
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation upon hire required
