Paratransit Operator CDL Trainee
About the role
The Paratransit Operator CDL Trainee is a temporary at-will trainee position with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA). The program is a 4-week training course where trainees work with RIPTA Training Instructors to obtain their full RI CDL driver’s license and required endorsements. Upon successful completion of the training and passing the CDL road skills test, trainees become eligible for permanent positions as Paratransit Operators.
This role supports RIPTA’s Paratransit Division, which provides transportation services for seniors and people with disabilities, primarily using 16-passenger vans that accommodate two or more wheelchairs (publicly known as the RIde Program).
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience with elderly and people with disabilities preferred.
- Excellent customer relations skills and the ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing.
- Computer literacy, including the ability to operate and read a tablet and manifest, follow directions, and use a road map.
- Valid RI CDL driver’s license with Passenger, General Knowledge, and Air Brake endorsements or an active RI CDL permit with Passenger, Air Brake, and General Knowledge endorsement permits. Candidates must secure a RI Class B CDL permit with these endorsements prior to training.
- RIPTA does not provide instruction for the permit written tests or CDL training for applicants licensed outside Rhode Island.
- Candidates are responsible for all costs associated with written tests, skills tests, and licensing fees.

Pay
$27.94 hourly.
