Paratransit Fleet Technician

This position performs routine and non-routine maintenance, diagnostic, and repair work on vehicles (buses, vans, etc.) adhering to FirstGroup standards. Work is performed under minimal supervision, handling complex problems independently with a commitment to safety. May mentor Technician I and/or Technician II and act as Shift Foreman with a shift premium. In Washington, this is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing, including cannabis.

Responsibilities

• Ensure vehicles are maintained and safe by performing limited repairs with minimal supervision, including replacement of light bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, checking fluid levels, changing fluids and filters, and lubricating components.
• Perform mechanical repairs under minimal supervision, including brakes, brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches, and other repairs.
• Maintain records of all maintenance work, including parts and supplies used. Ensure work orders are completed accurately and order repair parts from designated suppliers.
• Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle and equipment repair, utilizing computer and manufacturer’s software to determine mechanical defects.
• Lead preventative maintenance (PMs), safety maintenance inspections, and annual maintenance inspections at prescribed intervals.
• Remove, overhaul, and reinstall mechanical components with minimal supervision.
• Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective actions taken.
• Evaluate completed work prior to release and seek approval where required.
• Lead road calls and emergency services as necessary.
• Adhere to FirstGroup standards, policies, and procedures.
• Move vehicles safely between job and work area.
• Repair and maintain all shop equipment.
• Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment.
• Possess and maintain an adequate mechanic tool inventory to complete all assigned duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; vocational or technical certification in vehicle repair (preferred).
• Class B CDL with passenger endorsement required (or expected within 3 months of hire).
• State inspection license (if required).
• ASE Certification preferred; must participate in ASE testing program (expected to have 6 ASE certifications within 6 months of hire).
• Advanced mechanical aptitude and 5 years of automotive or diesel repair experience (preferred) or equivalent education and experience.
• Adhere to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Advanced problem-solving ability and computer skills.
• Comfortable using hand tools.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job.

Pay

$28.00/hr

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, and grease conditions.
• Ability to work under all weather conditions.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a crouched position or on back, lying on a mechanic’s creeper, beneath motor vehicle equipment.
