Job Summary

The job of Paraprofessional I is to assist assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of students and performing classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Fingerprinting and successful completion of a criminal background check are required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must be Highly Qualified as per the Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
  • Additional qualifications include:
    • At least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours)
    • Obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution
    • Satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher
  • Official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with the application or upon a contingent offer of employment.
  • Unofficial transcripts can serve as a placeholder until official transcripts are provided.
  • Effective communication skills with both children and adults, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English; proficiency in grammar and punctuation.
  • Basic math skills, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Proficiency in operating standard office equipment and Microsoft Office.

Prior to Employment

  • Selected candidates must be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check.
  • Provide official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment if applicable.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Adapt classroom work under the direction of the teacher and provide support to lesson plans while adhering to safety practices.
  • Administer tests and evaluations, proctor tests, and monitor student progress.
  • Confer with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement student objectives.
  • Implement students' learning and behavior plans to meet their social and behavioral needs, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs.
  • Maintain a safe and positive learning environment by monitoring individual students in various settings and providing appropriate classroom intervention.
  • Prepare teaching materials, perform record-keeping and clerical functions, and organize related reports to implement lesson plans and document student progress.
  • Report incidents such as fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc., to maintain the personal safety of students.
  • Administer first aid/CPR to students when necessary.
  • Assist other school personnel as required and needed.
  • Support a team environment by collaborating with other work units to effectively perform duties.
  • Participate in various meetings, workshops, and other training sessions to receive and convey information.
  • Read a variety of manuals, present information to others, follow written and verbal communication, and maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
